…one of the things I miss the most in the US is a real Caffè, Italiano. Why does all American coffee taste so bitter and dark to me? I am sure there must be places where one can find a great cup of Italiano-style espresso. Balanced, roasty-toasty, carmel notes and loaded with rich oily crema.
It’s not easy to achieve- in Italy or anywhere else. The machine must be balanced, well-used, and constantly serviced. The beans must be fresh, freshly ground, and roasted perfectly evenly. The water must be exactly the right temperature, and the water pressure is critical.
Fare un Caffè Italiano, is an art.
Where do you get your fix?
I think most American coffee bean blends are overroasted. I hate that. Illy’s medium roast does the best job for me when I want caffè. I use my Italian stove top espresso maker. Usually works fine.
You’re right- the best way to ensure a great cup of coffee is to make it at home!
And it is also by FAR the cheapest way, even if you buy high quality beans…Three Starbucks lattes will cover the cost of a box of Illy coffee…I’ve never understood why people would pay for the Starbucks crap which is way overpriced, too.
