I have always been a fan of Sicilian wines. From the sleek, elegant Nerello Mascalese of Etna’s steep slopes, to the powerful, heavy-handed Nero d’Avola of Siracusa- these wines have always captivated me.
I suppose it should come as no surprise that my first visit to Sicilia should be as utterly moving as it was. I realized that arriving there for the first time, truly felt like coming home.
There is a warmth about Sicilia that pulls me in- like an embrace. I found comfort in the scents of the island, and the exotic, wild, and untamed flavors of the food. The people are curious, shyly guarded, but immensely passionate. I felt a deep, physical bond with that place- one I can’t quite explain or describe, although it is something that still vibrates quietly inside me. I can’t wait to return.
“I hunger for your sleek laugh and your hands the color of a furious harvest.
I want to eat the sunbeams flaring in your beauty.”
― Pablo Neruda

I agree 100% we are planning to spend 4-6 weeks in Catania next year. Salvo Foti is one of heroes now and his wines are in another class. Great post!
Have you read Mary Taylor Simetti’s “On Persephone’s Island”? (And how have we not talked about Neruda?)
Wow you are so lucky! Have a great time!!!!!
